While there was no practice today as the Broncos began their first day of training camp, droves of veteran players got the chance to see the new team facility for the first time.
Players reported and took their physicals, attended team meetings, and enjoyed lifting in the new weight room in the new state-of-the-art facility.
Patrick Surtain II spoke about seeing the new facility for the first time on Monday, including a massive new locker room that can fit all 90 players on Denver’s training camp roster — an upgrade from the old building’s locker room that had a difficult time squeezing in all 53 players on a regular season roster without there being congestion.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Surtain said. “The locker room is crazy. It’s quite unique, too. It just gives a different feel, a different vibe. It’s like we’re leaving that in the past and we’re entering a new state, a new year. I think it’s well deserved for us as players with the amount of work we put in, too. Everything’s starting to come together with the facility, and I’m looking forward to building with the guys and being able to be in this building. It’s quite special.”
After falling short in the AFC Championship game, the path of getting back to that same spot isn’t guaranteed, and players have high expectations for this current Broncos team.
They have Super Bowl aspirations, but their mindset is focusing on one week at a time, which is something that benefited them last year. This roster has the right mentality, and if they can piece the run game together with the offense and generate more takeaways as a defense, this is a unit that absolutely can make it back to the AFC title.
“Our expectations are pretty high, but we are just going to take it week-by-week,” Surtain said. “Obviously, that’s the main goal, but it starts right here in training camp and it starts early on in the season. Our main focus is to start out fast and start out hot early. That way we can prepare ourselves to get to that stage.”
Quinn Meinerz was particularly excited about how connected the team facility is with all of the amenities the players need, with the weight room, kitchen, nutritionist station, and training room all being in close proximity — reducing overall foot traffic for players, which was something Broncos owners Greg Penner and Carrie Walton-Penner felt was important.
“I’ve already noticed how much closer everything is,” Meinerz said. “In the previous building, weight room, you have to walk. It sounds so spoiled, but you have to walk a little bit to go to the weight room. Right now the weight room is connected to the locker room pretty much, so everything is so close. Those little minutes of time do add up throughout the day, so it’ll be nice to just have a really good flow of traffic and everything.”
Players are excited about all of the new amenities of the new facility, as we are on the eve of Denver’s first practice, where they’ll be in jerseys and shorts for the first handful of days before they transition into shells and full pads.
I’m personally excited about practice being here because there’s a certain smell in the area at Dove Valley that I can’t get enough of — the smell of fresh cut grass, the sound of the sprinklers keeping the field properly hydrated.
Tomorrow, we’ll hear the first sounds of players talking, coaches instructing, and the whistles blowing.
