As is customary at this time of year, Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles met with the media at Halas Hall on Tuesday afternoon. He shared a variety of injury notes, including an update on cornerback Kyler Gordon, whose health has been a source of ire this summer.
Gordon, who has missed most of the team’s offseason program with what was described as a soft tissue injury, is dealing with a calf injury, according to Poles (via Brad Biggs).
“Obviously, [Gordon]’s frustrated. We’re frustrated. Everybody here is putting in time and effort to getting him back.”

We knew that Gordon was going to start camp on the PUP list with the lingering injury that’s sidelined him for most of the summer, so today is just confirmation. Unfortunately, it also confirms the frustration in the building surrounding Gordon’s availability.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson expressed frustration with Gordon’s availability during his tenure in Chicago earlier this summer, and wasn’t any happier when asked about it today:
#Bears head coach Ben Johnson's message to Kyler Gordon: Get healthy.
— Michal Dwojak (@mdwojak94) July 28, 2026There’s good reason for the frustration. Gordon is an integral part of Chicago’s defense, no matter how you feel about him right now. Everybody at Halas Hall knows it. I even wrote about that today in our latest “20 Most Important Bears of 2026” installment, where I ranked Gordon No. 12 on that list.
Gordon is central to this defense’s sub packages, and he’s also a live variable, which is why he’s higher than a couple of names you might expect. When he’s on the field, and right, he’s one of the more valuable pieces of the secondary, capable of covering the slot and doing the dirty situational work that makes an aggressive defense function.
The catch is the “when.” Gordon has dealt with soft-tissue issues this summer, and pillar four, the secondary holding up, runs directly through his availability. A healthy Gordon meaningfully raises the defense’s ceiling. A Gordon who’s in and out of the lineup drags it down. That range of outcomes, tied to a role that actually matters in January, is what puts him at 12.

— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) July 28, 2026In addition to the Gordon update, Poles shared some more injury notes to monitor at the onset of training camp, including TJ Edwards’ calf injury (which shouldn’t be much of an issue), rookie linebacker Keyshaun Elliott’s back issue, and more. Patrick Finley has a rundown here:
Other #Bears injury tidbits:LB TJ Edwards hurt his right calf training off-site. Nothing major, Poles said.LB Keyshaun Elliott has back pain.S Elijah Hicks has shin problem. Ozzy Trapilo, Shemar Turner, Noah Sewell recovering from surgery with no timelines.
— Patrick Finley (@patrickfinley) July 28, 2026The Gordon situation is equal parts frustrating and concerning, but outside of that, the first-day-of-camp injury updates aren’t all that bad in the grand scheme of things.
