ALBANY, N.Y. — After more than 500 students admitted to Howard University in D.C. were unenrolled weeks before the start of the semester, New York State is offering them a chance to study at a SUNY or CUNY school.
Gov. Kathy Hochul’s Office says all impacted students will receive expedited late admissions for the upcoming fall semester at participating state schools. The participating campuses include SUNY Albany, SUNY Binghamton, the University at Buffalo, Buffalo State University, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY New Paltz, and SUNY Oneonta.
New York is also providing an $800 credit to impacted students who decide to enroll in a state school, to help offset the non-refundable enrollment deposit paid to Howard University. If you were unenrolled from Howard, you can learn how to apply for a SUNY school here or a CUNY school here.
Why were students unenrolled from Howard?
Some of the unenrolled students told our NBC affiliate in D.C. that they got letters from Howard stating that they missed a payment deadline. One student said she had already packed for college when she received the letter.
Howard University said in a statement that the school repeatedly reached out to students and families between March and July, informing them of the payment deadlines. The school said it will give students a refund for any payments and scholarship dollars they had already sent. However, the tuition and housing deposits are nonrefundable.
