The sporting director of Turkish club Beşiktaş, Onder Ozen, announced on Monday that his club has withdrawn from negotiations with Egyptian football legend Mohamed Salah.
Ozen said at a press conference: “Demands began to arrive that would have complicated the financial aspects of the deal. I assume that a respected player like Salah is unaware of these details.”
“But through his agent, financial demands related to image rights emerged, at a level the club has never before granted to any player or employee.”
Ozen continued: “Our esteemed president clearly defined the point at which we must stop. Management is a legal process, and there is a legal percentage for commissions. Exceeding this percentage could mean engaging in illegal activities.”
He further explained: “Therefore, our president made a pragmatic decision rather than a public one. For the time being, we have withdrawn from the negotiating table.”
Ozen added: “Our offer to sign Salah, under the terms set by the club, remains valid. If we receive a positive response to this offer, we can discuss finalizing the deal. However, we will not make any other offer. If the player’s representatives wish to continue negotiations, that is up to them. They have also informed us that they are negotiating with other parties. We will not back down from our position, and as far as we are concerned, the matter is closed.”
“We met with Salah three times. My meetings with him were dedicated to explaining Beşiktaş’ project, the team’s formation, playing style, the club’s objectives, the nature of the historic rivalry, and the atmosphere within the club. The following day, our coach met with him, and we discussed tactical aspects.”
Ozen added: “And with that, the technical aspects of the negotiations were complete. However, when we began discussing the financial details, the smooth negotiations that had been present in the early days began to falter, starting on July 21. The pace of information exchange slowed, and demands began to emerge that threatened to derail the financial negotiations.”
Salah left Liverpool FC at the end of last season, after spending nine seasons with the Reds.
