ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester student is receiving a scholarship from the Evans Scholarship Foundation, which offers financial aid to high school caddies looking to advance their academic careers.
Jane Witkoski has worked at Oak Hill in the Caddie and Leadership Academy for the past three years. “It’s a great job to have because you meet so many people and you connect with so many people,” Witkoski said. “You learn social skills and you also learn service, which are really important skills to have.”
Drew Bailey, whose father Patrick founded the organization after receiving the Evans Scholarship himself in the late 1980s, helps out with Oak Hill’s caddy program and says the program creates lasting opportunities. “I don’t think our family would be where it’s at today without this,” Bailey said. “My dad got this scholarship in late 80s. So obviously it led him to plenty of opportunities. And it’s cool to see other kids get that opportunity as well and see where they go with it.”
Witkowski graduated from Chesterton Academy and plans to attend the University of Maryland. “It meant a lot, because,I saw how so many people helped me, like Mr. Bailey and so many teachers from my school,” Witkoski said. “And just the country club in general helped me to be able to have this opportunity and to be able to go into college knowing I’ll be debt free.”
Witkoski is the youngest of five children. Her brother also received the scholarship in 2023 and was there when she learned she would be getting it.
“And I was just so excited because it was during Christmas and I got home from doing something and my mom put it under like the Christmas tree and my brother was there too,” Witkoski said. “And I just opened it up and it was so exciting.”
