Former Australia pacer Glenn McGrath has made comments on India National Cricket Team pacer Jasprit Bumrah. McGrath has commented on Bumrah’s future while being part of the MRF Pace Foundation.
He also mentioned Bumrah as ‘a spring chicken’ as the speedster’s longevity has been called into question with injury problems due to his unique bowling action.
Jasprit Bumrah recently returned to ODI cricket after a break of 968 days in the recently concluded three-match ODI tour against the England National Cricket Team.
However, after playing two games, he got injured as he had knee swelling during the third ODI match, which ruled him out of the series, and his participation in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka is also in doubt. He picked two wickets in the series against the Three Lions but bowled well and was economical.
"Well again it’s up to him"- Glenn McGrath on Jasprit Bumrah's future
Glenn McGrath stated that Jasprit Bumrah needs to find a way to choose the format for whether he wants to prioritise Test cricket or play T20 cricket.
McGrath also pointed out that Jasprit Bumrah’s injuries are very unfortunate due to his hyper extension of the hand while releasing the ball, as it creates more pressure on the joint to release the ball.
“Well again it’s up to him what he wants. How old’s Bumrah now? 31- 32? He’s only a spring chicken. So he’s got to find a way to have a bit of longevity. He’s had a few injuries unfortunately, but he’s class, a quality bowler. Just see what he wants to do.”
“That’s what it comes down to: whether he wants to focus on Test cricket or whether he just wants to play T20. It also depends on his body. And like I said, guys who hyper-extend their arm do place a bit more stress through that joint there. So we’ll see what the future holds,” McGrath, who is part of the MRF Pace Foundation, said on Monday.
"I’m a little disappointed these days"- Glenn McGrath on pacers' injury problems
Glenn McGrath also urged pacers to become accustomed to taking more pressure on themselves rather than being cotton-wrapped to avoid repeated injuries, adding that injuries are a part of a fast bowler's life and that he was "disappointed" to see the faster bowlers being cotton-wrapped these days due to workload management and to stay injury-free.
“It’s the nature of the beast being a fast bowler; it’s not a natural action so injuries are part of the game,” McGrath, who played 124 Tests and 250 ODIs, said. “Where I’m a little disappointed these days, and it’s probably been that way a little bit for a long time, is that they put them (fast bowlers) in cotton wool.”
“We try to nurse them back to full fitness, and we protect them. The best way to do it is to get stronger than the stresses of fast bowling. To do a rehab program for months and months puts your fitness and your strength so far behind that you’ve got so far to catch up,” he added.
