"It was too complicated and it wasn't his thing. He was more into straight-ahead rock & roll. Among the other things, we jammed with Neil the first day we met him on this opening riff. When he started playing, we looked at each other and were like, 'Yeah, this is the guy. He can play. He'll do.'"
That early rehearsal helped establish the musical partnership that would remain intact for more than four decades and produce one of rock's most celebrated catalogs.
Musically, the track announced Rush's evolution.
Opening with an acoustic guitar before exploding into driving riffs, soaring vocals, and intricate rhythms, "Anthem" showcased a level of sophistication that pointed toward the progressive rock direction the band would continue exploring on albums such as 2112, A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres.
