GATES, N.Y. — The family of Jmere Ridley Smith honored him Sunday on the one-year anniversary of his death. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with Jmere’s mother at Cobbs Hill Park.
Jmere’s family gathered for a barbecue, a balloon release and a celebration of his life. He was shot and killed one year ago at a Wegmans warehouse where he worked.
White and blue balloons filled the sky in his memory earlier on Sunday. The family also played his music, which his mother, Jamala Ridley, said is one of the only things she has left of Jmere.
Jamala said every day of the past year has been a struggle. She said she hears his voice every day reminding her to take care of herself.
“We miss him, we miss talking to him. We miss — I know his friends miss doing music with him because that’s his music we playing right over there on the speaker. It’s just, it’s very humbling to have everybody here today just to know how much he was loved,” Ridley said.
Jamala said Wegmans called her earlier on Sunday to let her know that they held a moment of silence for Jmere. A jury convicted Kyshonne Greenbwas for Jmere’s murder, and a judge sentenced him to 23 years to life in prison.
