Oscar Piastri did not hold back his frustration after Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, branding his clash with Carlos Sainz as "one of the dumbest things" he has ever witnessed on a Formula 1 circuit after the incident derailed what he believes was a genuine shot at victory.
The McLaren driver had wrestled the lead away from teammate Lando Norris on the opening lap and looked firmly in control through the first half of the race.
But his afternoon unraveled during the second round of pit stops when he found himself caught behind Sainz's Williams as the Spaniard battled Fernando Alonso.
As Piastri attempted to lap the Williams, contact between the two cars cost the Australian crucial seconds. Norris, running a longer stint, capitalized moments later by making his own stop and emerging ahead in the net race lead – a position he never relinquished.
Piastri fumes over costly contact
Still visibly frustrated after the race, Piastri made it clear he saw no justification for Sainz's actions.
“For me, there’s no excuse at all. That’s got to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen on a race track,” he said. “I don’t really care what excuse you give.”
The collision was only the beginning of Piastri's misery. His hopes of mounting a comeback disappeared completely when a gearbox failure forced him to retire, leaving Norris to claim McLaren's first victory of the 2026 season.
Despite ultimately failing to finish, Piastri remained convinced the race had been his to lose.
“It's definitely a lost chance, yes,” he said. “The pace wasn't great at all on the hard tyres, but I felt like as long as I held track position, I had a decent chance of hanging on to the end.
“It wasn't going to be pretty, but I felt like it was possible. From that point on, pretty much everything that could have gone wrong, even the things you never think of, did go wrong.”
The combination of the clash, the lost track position and the subsequent reliability issue transformed what had looked like a commanding afternoon into one of the Australian's most painful defeats of the season.
Sainz points to Williams system failure
Queried after the race on his inadvertent run-in with Piastri, Sainz rejected the suggestion that the incident was a driver error, instead revealing that Williams suffered a technical issue that prevented him from receiving the usual blue-flag information.
According to the Spaniard, the failure left him unaware that Piastri was attempting to lap him while he was fully engaged in a battle with Alonso.
"We didn't have blue lights on the steering wheel, which normally, when we are in fights like that one, where we are fighting for position, it helps us to understand whether we're getting lapped or not,” he explained.
"So at this stage, I had no idea I was about to get lapped, and on top of that, yeah, I was in a big fight with Fernando, trying to undercut him into the corner, and I wouldn't have expected Oscar to be there.
"And even if he was there, he was in my dead spot on the angle, so it was impossible, honestly, from my side to avoid it. So better communication would have helped, but at the same time, it was a racing thing that sometimes happens.
"Something was wrong in the system, and today it was a very difficult day to control the blue flag.

"There are very clear rules around it. If we were not so slow, there wouldn't be so many blue flags, so we know what the solution is. Last year there were almost no blue flags because the whole field was within half a second, and this year we were getting lapped twice."
While Sainz insisted the collision was the product of an unfortunate systems failure rather than negligence, Piastri's uncompromising verdict ensured one of the Hungarian Grand Prix's most contentious flashpoints is unlikely to fade quietly as Formula 1 heads into its summer break.
