Rich explained that after the incident he changed producers and record labels in an effort to break free from the country genre.
"Maybe I was rebelling," he said, "but not against John Denver and not against country music."
That makes the infamous CMA moment look different in hindsight.
Rich wasn't simply a country star who imploded at an awards ceremony. He was an eclectic musician who had never fit neatly into one box.
Before becoming known for his lush country-pop hits, Rich had recorded rockabilly and worked as a session musician at Sun Records. His musical influences stretched from country to jazz, blues and rock 'n' roll. That versatility helped make him distinctive, but it also made his career difficult to categorize.
By the early 1970s, he had found enormous commercial success.
"Behind Closed Doors" became one of his signature songs, while "The Most Beautiful Girl" became an even bigger crossover hit, reaching No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and country charts.
Rich was named CMA Entertainer of the Year in 1974, putting him at the absolute center of Nashville's establishment just one year before the infamous incident.
Then came the envelope.
Rich continued recording after the controversy, but his relationship with the country establishment had clearly changed.
His final studio album, Pictures and Paintings, was released in 1992 and leaned heavily into the jazz influences that had been part of Rich’s musical identity long before his country stardom. The album was critically acclaimed and ultimately earned him a posthumous Grammy nomination.
Rich died in July 1995 at age 62.
