His therapist tries to convince him that the woman doesn’t actually exist and is only a coping mechanism he’s using, but he continues to speak with her. They soon develop a romantic relationship, even though he eventually learns she is married.
The woman ultimately asks him to meet so she can leave her husband to be with him, but when they get on a train together, she tells him that a man has been following her. After she is taken by the man, Phil hunts him down and beats him to death.
However, when the cops arrive, she claims she does not know Phil and lets the cops take him away in handcuffs. For a moment, Phil wonders whether he really has been hearing voices. But then, through their telepathic connection, she admits that she manipulated him into killing her husband.
The closing narration of the episode says, "What kind of compromise goes into connecting with another human being? Is it meeting in the middle or going all the way to the end of the line? Phillip Hayes found connection, but only with the darkest part of his soul. A region of self that he'll inhabit for the rest of his life, here in the Twilight Zone."

Gillian Jacobs, who many people know as Britta from Community, starred in the episode. "I was so excited for a lot of different reasons,” she told CBS. “One of which is that my good friend Alex Rubens, who wrote on Community for years, is one of the main writers and producers on the series. It was a chance for me to get to work with Alex again. I'd missed that since Community ended. Jimmi Simpson is an incredible actor, and he also stars on the episode. That was exciting, and obviously, any time Jordan Peele asks you to do something, you feel very honored and lucky. I thought it was a really interesting episode, and a fascinating character for me to play."
