There's something off about the wording and the tone in the unverified ransom notes connected with the Nancy Guthrie case—according to CSI Sheryl McCollum. And it's making her think that the messages aren't legitimate.
In an interview with NewsNation's Jesse Weber Live, McCollum took a deeper look at the notes and pointed out some things that she found suspicious. "First of all, it starts with a great, 'Hello, Savannah.' That’s not a demand. That’s not urgency," McCollum said of the first ransom note that was sent to news stations within days of Guthrie's disappearance. "Then they go straight into explaining who they have. They say, ‘We have your mother, Nancy.’ That’s not even necessary. That’s way too much information. You’re explaining the obvious. You go on to explain more things that are obvious. She’s safe but scared. Of course she’s scared. Everybody’s scared. The whole family’s scared. But if this was a demand for money, that doesn’t even play into what you’re saying.
"They’re trying to track this person down. And for whatever reason, they’re having trouble doing that. But they’re looking again at when this note was delivered, why it was delayed 48 hours, the amount of money they’re asking for," McCollum continued. "Again, it’s odd amounts…Bitcoin was odd. Even the person that wrote this note to say, ‘Hey, we’re going to hold her for seven days.’ Wow. Why are you giving us a week to get the money together? It makes no sense…This sounds like a con to me. Even asking for U.S. currency. Who talks that way?"
Something else that McCollum marked as a red flag came in the second unverified ransom note, which claimed that Guthrie, 84, had died and was "buried in nature."
“Everybody's buried in nature. If you're buried, you're in nature. So again, they're saying something. They're over explaining. It's odd," she continued, adding, "it doesn't make any sense. It just does not ring true to me. If you are still trying to ransom her and she has died and you've gotten away with it, why are you continuing to reach out? Seems like to me you would get ghost and be done."
The legitimacy of the ransom notes is still under investigation.

Guthrie has been missing since Feb. 1. Investigators believe that she was abducted from her Arizona home in the middle of the night, but her whereabouts are still unknown. Moreover, neither the Pima County Sheriff's Department nor the FBI have been able to name a suspect in the case.
