The Phillies announced that they have selected the contract of catcher Payton Henry. He will take the active roster spot of fellow catcher Rafael Marchán, who has been placed on the 10-day injured list with left knee patellar tendinitis, retroactive to July 23. To open a 40-man spot, right-hander Brad Keller has been transferred to the 60-day IL.
The Phils have had a three-catcher setup for most of this season, with Marchán and Garrett Stubbs backing up J.T. Realmuto. That has quickly changed. Left wrist inflammation put Stubbs on the IL three days ago. Now Marchán has joined him, forcing the Phils to dip into their depth.
Henry, 29, gets back to the big leagues for the first time in several years. He got into 20 games with the Marlins over the 2021 and 2022 seasons, hitting .186/.314/.209 in 51 plate appearances. Since then, he has been stuck in the minors, bouncing to the Brewers, Blue Jays, Phillies and Yankees. He started this year with the Yanks on a minor league deal but was released at the beginning of July, which is when the Phillies scooped him up and added him as non-roster depth.
In 1,062 Triple-A plate appearances, he has a .249/.321/.391 line, decent enough for a depth catcher thanks to his 33 home runs hit at that level. Baseball Prospectus ranks his framing, blocking and work with the running game as close to average at the Triple-A level. He still has options and could be easily sent back to the minors when Stubbs and/or Marchán get back from the IL.
As for Keller, the Phils announced last week that he has a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow. It’s not yet clear if he will require surgery but even non-surgical recoveries from that kind of injury take months. He will almost certainly miss the remainder of the season even if he doesn’t go under the knife, so this transfer was inevitable.
