ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Gas prices have been rising in the Rochester area and nationally this week as the war with Iran continues to escalate.
Rochester’s average hit $4.27 per gallon on Friday morning, about five cents higher than a week ago, according to AAA’s latest report. Rochester’s average remains higher than the national average, which hit $4.10 per gallon on Friday, about 12 cents higher than a week ago. It also remains higher than the state average, which is $4.21 per gallon.
Gas prices have risen worldwide during the war because of the fighting and volatility around the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil supply passes. This week, the U.S. has launched several airstrikes targeting Iran, while Iran’s government has attacked ships in the strait and hit U.S. assets and allies in Persian Gulf countries. A week ago, Iranian airstrikes killed two U.S. service members in Jordan, and the military identified the remains of two more fallen service members.
Tips to save on gas
News10NBC’s Kristi Blake has some tips to save on gas while the war continues. Keep your gas tank at least half full. This way, you have time to choose the cheapest gas station instead of what’s closest.
You can also become a member of a gas station chain, such as Delta Sonic, BJ’s, or Costco, to get a lower price. Speedway and Tops gas stations also have rewards programs.
You can also use GasBuddy’s fuel finder to find the lowest price. According to GasBuddy, the lowest price on Friday is $3.83 per gallon at the SNK on North Clinton Avenue. There are also ways to improve your car’s fuel economy. Drive smoothly, as hard braking and acceleration can reduce fuel economy. Regularly check tire pressure, as low pressure can affect fuel efficiency.
One consumer, Timothy Lonergan, said he’s lucky that his car isn’t a gas guzzler. He drives to Victor for work, so he couldn’t imagine filling up an SUV or large truck.
“The prices go up, but what are you going to do? We all got to drive to work. We all got to get where we’re going,” he said.
Another consumer, Jose Rodríguez, says that gas prices have been hard on him and so many other people.
