Alex Scott had a stellar 2025-26 season for Bournemouth and is reportedly the subject of interest from several big clubs. But just how impressive has he been for the Cherries, and what type of player could his potential suitors be signing?

The midfielder was integral to Bournemouth’s successful 2025-26, in which they recorded their highest-ever Premier League finish, but he has signalled his desire to move on by apparently rejecting a new contract this summer.
If reports are to be believed, almost the entire ‘big six’ have shown an interest in signing Scott, and Chelsea have already had a £64 million bid for his services rejected. But what type of player would they – or any other club – be getting?
In short, Scott is a combative box-to-box midfielder, but this statement doesn’t highlight just how developed his all-round game is.
At the centre of Scott’s impressive 2025-26 season was his work rate; he looked to touch every blade of grass in each game he played. He covered 11.6 kilometres per 90 on average in the Premier League, more than any other Bournemouth player who started at least 10 games.
Scott’s success last season was also underpinned by his tenacious attitude, something key to Bournemouth’s style of play which saw them ruffle the feathers of the Premier League’s big dogs on multiple occasions.
He made 184 runs tracking back to his position (a run starting in the opposition’s half towards his team’s end of the pitch to regain his defensive position), which was more than any other player in the top flight. Crucially, this doesn’t mean Scott got caught out of position often; it means he’s extremely diligent defensively and willing to do the legwork that others might skip.
He was not just running around the football pitch like a headless chicken, either. Scott ran with a purpose and a determination to help his team. He won possession 6.1 times per 90, the eighth most of any Premier League player to play 1,000+ minutes last season, and he made 38 tackles, the fifth most of any Premier League player aged 22 or under (at the time of writing).
These traits could become incredibly valuable to his success if he gets his big move, as he could position himself as a player who does the hard yards and the dirty work that attacking talents sometimes don’t want to do. Look at how that helped Nico O’Reilly. He also completed 1,182 passes, the second most of any player in that same group.
Where Scott really thrives, though, is when he has the ball and is driving at opposition defenders. He almost has the quick feet, agility and dribbling ability of a winger, yet he is often running through the centre of the park or driving into the half-space, which is awkward to defend.
Scott ranked fifth among midfielders under the age of 23 (1,000+ league minutes) for progressive carries per 90 (6.86), defined as moving with the ball at least 5m upfield. He also carried the ball 68.6m upfield per 90 on average, ranking him fifth in that group of players.
Another important aspect of Scott’s dribbling ability is his capacity to win free-kicks. He won 60 fouls in the league last season, the fifth most of any player. And we all know how important set-pieces have become in the Premier League.
Even the best teams in the league will face moments when they are under the cosh, and having a player like Scott, who can carry the ball upfield and win fouls to break up the play, could be the difference between succumbing to this pressure or riding through it unscathed.
At just 22 years old, Scott is obviously not yet the complete package, and one potential area for improvement is in the opposition’s box.
Four goals and one assist in all competitions last season isn’t a dismal return, but a player with Scott’s talent is capable of more. As Bournemouth have to suffer without the ball for long periods in some games, this may not allow him to naturally wander forward as much as he potentially could.
Perhaps a new coach could harness his running ability to turn him into a top-class box-crasher and give him a more creative role (he only created 0.7 open play chances per 90 last season).
To be clear, Scott’s suitors wouldn’t just be signing potential.
He is more than capable of joining a ‘big six’ side and instantly adding value to their midfield with his ball-winning and ball-carrying abilities. His natural game makes him perfectly suited to playing on the world’s biggest stages, and his mentality, which saw him go from Guernsey FC to the England squad in under six years, is exactly what’s needed to succeed at the biggest clubs on the planet.
What’s exciting is there’s certainly more to come from him, and this could turn Scott from a top prospect to one of the game’s leading midfielders.
