The Spaniard joined Williams after making way for Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, buying into James Vowles' ambitious vision of rebuilding the historic team into a race-winning force.
That faith initially looked well placed as Sainz delivered two podium finishes last season, but Williams' progress has stalled dramatically in 2026.
An overweight car, production setbacks and disappointing performance have left the team languishing at the back of the midfield with just 11 points from the opening 10 races, fueling speculation over whether Sainz could look elsewhere.
Summer talks will shape Sainz's future
Ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, Sainz confirmed that discussions over his future are approaching, although no firm deadline has been set.
“I honestly don't know, I cannot give you a date,” he said.
“I always said I was going to wait until the summer to sit down with my team and think about this and discuss with them, with James and everyone, the future of the team and my future in it.
“I expect that obviously during the summer we will start to make a decision and start to see a bit more of the situation. Exact timings, I don't know.”
The uncertainty surrounding several high-profile drivers for 2027 has intensified the Formula 1 driver market. But for the four-time Grand Prix winner, the deciding factor is not outside opportunities – it is whether Williams can convince him its recovery is back on track.
Vision remains, but the clock is ticking
Sainz acknowledged that the roadmap he envisioned when joining Williams has shifted significantly, forcing him to rethink how long he is prepared to wait before challenging for victories again.
“I think there’s no secret that my expectations or timeline of how long it would take me to win a race again, with Williams being the place to do that, has been delayed by a year or two,” he said.
“It depends on how quickly we manage to bounce back from this situation.
“Obviously I had in my mind a timeframe that I was willing to accept in order to help this team get back to a winning position, and how long I was willing to wait for myself to be fighting for wins again.
“Clearly that timeline unfortunately – for all of us, because the team is also affected by it – is going to be longer than we expected, and that path is going to be longer than expected.”
Even so, Sainz insisted his belief in Williams' long-term project has not disappeared. While the current campaign has fallen well below expectations, he remains encouraged by what he sees behind the scenes.
“Having said that, I can see what the team is investing in the future. I see the vision of the team is still pretty clear. I see how much is going on behind the scenes when we leave car performance aside,” he added.

“It still gives me confidence and motivation that we’re going in the right direction. It’s just that this year’s car, for whatever reason, has been underperforming and very short to our expectations through many, many different reasons that I'm not going to talk about them again here.
“I need to re-adapt my thinking and portray myself now in three to four years' time and make a decision. But I'm still confident in the path and the project that we are in.”
Those comments underline both Sainz's continued faith in Vowles' rebuilding effort and the reality that his patience is not unlimited. Williams still has his confidence, but turning that confidence into a long-term commitment will depend on proving that this season's setbacks are merely a detour rather than a sign the project has lost its way.
