There’s some temporary relief for the thousands of Haitians living under temporary protected status in Chicago and across the United States.
A federal appeals court blocked the Trump administration from ending the temporary protected status program through the weekend.
So, it means their protections and work permits which were to expire Friday are now extended until July 27.
The order does not however reverse the Supreme Court’s ruling in June that cleared the way for the rollback of temporary protected status for Haitian immigrants.
“It is watching the clock and counting the hours,” said Aline Lauture, executive director of the Haitian Congress Center. “Now we are counting 4 days from now.”
Haiti became part of the TPS program back in 2010. It happened after a devastating earthquake and that allowed some 350,000 Haitians to come to the United States to live and work legally.
“How did we go so many years without really a comprehensive immigration reform? The people that have been here for years are people have established themselves here. They work, they pay taxes, they purchase homes, cars, then they put in at least over $5 billion dollars in the economy. They pay into social security, but they can’t collect social security,” Lauture said.
Tanya Woods is executive director of the West Side Justice Center.
“What we don’t want for Haitian Americans is this day-by-day, week-by week extension,” said Woods. “We would like to see that extension extended well enough into the future where the thousands of Haitian Americans can get their affairs in order, they can seek relief in the United States, and they can continue to live here lawfully.”
In a statement, the department of homeland security told NBC Chicago; “Once TPS ends, aliens will be subject to deportation unless they have another lawful basis to remain in the United States. Aliens without legal authorization to remain in the United States are encouraged to use the Customs and Border Protection ‘CBP Home’ app to depart from the U.S.”
