Jeff Lebby will be trying to get Mississippi State out of the SEC doldrums in 2026, after his Bulldogs suffered through a 5-8 season last fall that included a 1-7 mark in the SEC.
And the Mississippi State head coach will be trying to accomplish that with a very athletic quarterback who Lebby believes has a ton of potential. On Thursday at SEC Media Days in Tampa, Lebby appeared before reporters and so did Kamario Taylor, the quarterback he admires so much.
The Mississippi product got a taste of things in Starkville and in the SEC in his first year in the program last year. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder threw for 629 yards with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. And he did a lot of damage with his legs, running for 458 yards and 8 TDs.
Lebby saw that flash up close, and while he recounted with reporters in Tampa about the first time he met Taylor, Lebby was also asked about which NFL quarterback he would compare Taylor to.
His answer? That would be Robert Griffin III, the former Baylor star who won the Heisman Trophy in 2011 and went on to a career in the NFL that showed flashes of stardom but was cut short by injury. Lebby had an up-close look at Griffin, too, since he was on the offensive coaching staff at Baylor during the years when Griffin was there from 2008-11.
“I think the closest comparison, honestly, is RGIII. The athleticism, the ability to throw the football down the field, the arm talent,” Jeff Lebby said. “I think that’s the closest comparison I’ve seen from my eyes in practice every day.”
