ROCHESTER, N.Y. — ESL Ballpark will host a professional boxing event on Aug. 18, months after boxers, referees and many others were left unpaid at the Boxing Extravaganza at the Blue Cross Arena in April.

About the event at ESL
The events are completely separate, and there should be no concerns over a repeat of what happened a few months back.
“We’ve worked with Steve, the promoter on shows in the past here, and we’ve had some success together working with him,” said Dan Mason, general manager of the Red Wings.
“We have enough business community backing us where every fighter during the night who performs will be paid. And that’s what the commission is looking for guarantees on and we have those guarantees,” said Steve Nelson, one of the event promoters.
The boxing event, called “Defying the Odds,” was originally scheduled for Tuesday, July 14. Mason said there were issues solidifying one of the promoter’s opponents, but that’s been resolved.
April’s boxing event
As for April’s event, boxing managers for Bryce Mills and Julio Rosa told News10NBC they still haven’t been paid. Russell Peltz, boxing manager for Mills, said him, Rosa, and the head of the New York State Athletic Commission all testified before a grand jury.

“I know the New York State Athletic Commission is going through the process of liquidating the surety bond. The promoter has to post a bond of $20,000. Hopefully they can liquidate that and pay some of the fighters. Someone’s going to file civil and criminal charges sooner or later, and that’s where we are,” Peltz said.
Peltz said even with liquidating that, organizers would still owe $50,000 to $60,000 just for the actual boxing.
“I don’t know what the feeling is in Rochester about boxing right now after what happened in April. Now, on the other hand, the news about what happened in April, as more people may be thinking about boxing in Rochester, it could work that way to their advantage,” Peltz said.
GoFundMe for fighters
A GoFundMe was set up to help pay for the fighters from the event in April. When News10NBC went to check its progress, “Fundraiser Not Found” appeared.

“My gut feeling is they intended well and they just were over their heads and didn’t know how to create an event in this community. Boxing’s never been easy, but you have to have everything in place in order to go forward,” Nelson said.
Peltz said Derick Gramling had his promoter license indefinitely suspended. News10NBC reached out to Gramling and United and Healing Through Hope of Monroe County, run by Clay Harris, by email multiple times and haven’t heard back.
