Residents of the Tijuana River Valley are getting another round of air purifiers, thanks to an effort from the county and a renewed push to help South Bay cope with dangerous levels of hydrogen sulfide.
County supervisor Paloma Aguirre, whose district includes the Tijuana River Valley region and other parts of South Bay affected by the environmental crisis, made the announcement on Wednesday alongside scientists and community leaders.
“Our South County families have endured an intolerable public health burden for far too long,” Aguirre said in a statement. “While we continue pushing relentlessly for long-term infrastructure repairs at the border, we cannot allow our residents to suffer in their own homes in the meantime.
“Securing this $4 million was a non-negotiable fight to deliver immediate, tangible relief. Every family in Imperial Beach, San Ysidro, and Nestor deserves clean air and peace of mind inside their living spaces.”
The AIRE Program offers specialized purifiers to help mitigate the degraded air quality that is particularly difficult on the very young, the elderly, and the ill. The air contains significant amounts of hydrogen sulfide, which can cause major, chronic health issues.
These purifiers contain potassium permanganate, which can efficiently filter out hydrogen sulfide and other gases.
“While this measure can only provide temporary relief, we recognize the urgent need for immediate relief as affected communities continue to face the impacts of the Tijuana River Valley crisis,” said Paula Forbis, an air pollution control officer with the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District.
There is no cost for these purifiers, but residents do need to apply, either online or by calling the program helpline at (858) 586-2600. Multilingual support and assistance are available.
