This week marks 32 years since the International Astronomical Union named an asteroid orbiting between Mars and Jupiter after Frank Zappa, who had died the previous December.
"Minor planet number 3834 has been named in honor of innovative rock musician Frank Zappa," reads the official announcement at the time, according to the union's website. "Named in memory of Frank Zappa (1940-1993), rock musician and composer of innovative contemporary symphonic, chamber and electronic music. Zappa was an eclectic, self-trained artist and composer with incredible energy and a biting wit, and his music transcends the usual music barriers. Before 1989 he was regarded as a symbol of democracy and freedom by many people in Czechoslovakia."
For those not familiar, Zappa was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. His mainstream claim to fame might be “Valley Girl,” which featured his 14-year-old daughter, Moon Zappa. The song made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
“Valley Girl” was originally Moon’s idea, since she wanted to spend more time with her father, who was always busy working. The lyrics were meant to poke fun at youth culture at the time.
Zappa was known for other hits like “Peaches en Regalia,” “Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow,” “Dirty Love” and “Dancin’ Fool.”
