US President Donald Trump saidon Thursday that the proposed US-Saudi civil nuclear agreement will moveforward only if Saudi Arabia joins the Abraham Accords*.
Trump stated that thearrangement with the US Department of Energy would be limited to civilian,non-military nuclear activities and would not permit uranium enrichment,noting, “The United States is not opposed to Civil (Non-Enriched) NuclearFacilities.”
Washington and Riyadh signedtwo accords on Tuesday creating the legal framework for long-term civiliannuclear cooperation. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy MinisterPrince Abdulaziz bin Salman signed a peaceful nuclear cooperation pact, knownas a “123 agreement,” alongside a bilateral safeguards agreement, according tothe US Department of Energy.
Israeli officials described aprospective United States-Saudi agreement that would permit Saudi uraniumenrichment as a "bright red line" and a threat to Israel's security,Israel's Channel 12 report. The officials, who were not named in the broadcast,said the agreement could set off a nuclear arms race across the region, andwould give Riyadh an initial step toward a weapons program.
