COLLINS, N.Y. — State police are investigating a death at a Western New York prison.
An inmate attacked another inmate around 11 p.m. at Collins Correctional in Erie County. The attack happened in the residential rehabilitation unit.
Jose Aponte was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. According to the Department of Corrections website, the 34-year-old was serving time for an attempted burglary in the Bronx.
The other inmate’s name has not been released. State police, DOCCS and the Attorney General’s Office are investigating.
