Batman fans were dealt another disappointing blow this month as Robert Pattinson's second outing as the caped crusader was pushed back yet again.

The much-anticipated sequel hasn't had an easy journey to the screen, despite the first film proving a major success when it landed in cinemas in March 2022.

Indeed, director Matt Reeves has tested the patience of fans, but the filmmaker's rock solid track record suggests that The Batman: Part II will be worth the wait.

Pattinson reprises his role as Bruce Wayne aka Batman, with Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson adding to the project's star power.

They were initially thought to be playing Harvey Dent (aka Two-Face) and his wife, Gilda, although this has yet to be officially confirmed by Reeves or DC Studios.

Filming is taking place in the UK, with locations including Warner Bros's cutting-edge studio in Leavesden, plus the gothic cities of Liverpool and Glasgow.

The Batman Part II release date 

The Batman: Part II will now be released in cinemas on Friday 18 February 2028, almost six years since the original film swooped onto the screen.

The film has suffered a series of cascading delays over the past few years, with the latest (and hopefully last) being announced in July 2026, pushing the blockbuster another four-and-a-half months down the calendar.

It had previously been eyeing an October 2027 launch.

Director Matt Reeves announced the start of filming via X, where he shared a blurred still of the "first shot" of production, which sees a person, or possibly a cadaver, in what could be an operating theatre or morgue. Suitably eerie!

Reeves later shared a camera test clip on Vimeo, which gave us a brief glimpse of Robert Pattinson back in the cape and cowl.

Explaining the long wait for the film, James Gunn previously wrote on Threads: "Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write."

The Batman Part II cast: New and returning

Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz will reprise their roles as billionaire socialite Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, and Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, in The Batman Part II.

The forthcoming blockbuster has also added several huge names to its ensemble cast, including comic book movie veterans Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson.

The pair will be shedding their much-loved Winter Soldier and Black Widow personas, with early reports suggesting they would be Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face, and his wife Gilda, respectively.

Since then, speculation has shifted to Stan potentially playing serial killer Victor Zsasz, while Johansson has been suggested for a new take on Poison Ivy. For now, we'll have to just wait and see which of these theories, if any, prove accurate.

Addressing his mystery Batman role, Stan told Deadline: "I'm nervous and trying to keep surprising myself."

British acting royalty Charles Dance, whose recent works include Game of Thrones and The Day of the Jackal, will also star in The Batman: Part II as Harvey's cruel father, Charles Dent.

Unsurprisingly, the sequel will also bring back key figures in the Batman mythos, such as James Gordon (played by Jeffrey Wright), Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis) and Oz Cobb aka Penguin (Colin Farrell).

After a well-received debut in the 2022 film, Farrell cemented his status as a fan favourite with his very own HBO spin-off series, which took us deeper into the twisted mind and business of his crime boss.

Nevertheless, the actor revealed to Collider that his role in The Batman: Part II is relatively small, while it's been confirmed (via MTV) that his The Penguin co-star Cristin Milioti (Sofia Falcone) will be absent entirely.

"I haven't got much to do on it, but I'll go for four or five weeks," said Farrell. "I'll be there for a few weeks. I'm so excited to see it as a fan."

Penguin's role may not be large, but it could still be highly relevant, if earlier comments from filmmaker Matt Reeves (via Variety) are anything to go by.

"There are details that actually connect right into the way the next movie begins," he explained, back in September 2024, "and the way that Oz enters that world as we hand the baton back to Batman."

A big question mark remains over Barry Keoghan's Joker, who was teased in a cameo scene at the end of the first film, which drew a somewhat mixed reception from fans.

Keoghan has remained tight-lipped about a potential reappearance in Part II, but it seems plausible he'd make another brief appearance – perhaps teeing up an expanded role in the likely third film.

The Batman Part II plot theories

The Batman: Part II plot details are being kept largely under wraps, but we can infer some of the film's events based on the casting revealed so far.

Chiefly, the addition of Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent suggests that we may see a Two-Face origin story, so it will be interesting to see how it differs from Christopher Nolan's memorable version from 2008's The Dark Knight.

Speaking to Variety in 2024, writer-director Matt Reeves teased an "epic story" of deep corruption, adding that "the seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie".

He continued: "Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can't be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that."

The following year, when Reeves had finally put the finishing touches on his screenplay, The Batman co-star Colin Farrell told crowds at Zurich Film Festival (via THR) what to expect from the long-awaited project.

"I've read the script, from start to finish, and I can't say much about it," the Sugar star revealed. "But it's deeper, scarier, the stakes are bigger."
