Pillars of Hope information session
Local professionals have an opportunity on Wednesday to learn about volunteering for the 20th annual Pillars of Hope program to mentor students in the Rochester City School District during the upcoming school year.
Pillars of Hope brings together local African-American and Latino professionals to visit RCSD schools, speak about their experiences, and become role models. Volunteers must spend at least one hour each month on classroom visits, field trips, and foster a personal connection with students.
Current and prospective volunteers can attend an information session at 6 p.m. at Rochester City Hall on Church Street. You can learn more about Pillars of Hope here and apply to volunteer here. You can also call the Mayor’s Office of Special Projects at (585)-428-7192. The deadline to apply to volunteer is Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Henrietta data center laws meeting
The Town of Henrietta is holding a public hearing on Wednesday to discuss proposed restrictions on where large-scale data centers can be built.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at Henrietta Town Hall. The town board will discuss proposed zoning restrictions on data centers, which are increasingly being built to keep up with the massive amount of computing power that AI chatbots need. The meeting comes amid a one-year statewide pause on large data center construction that Gov. Kathy Hochul signed.
As News10NBC has covered, data centers have raised criticism because they require large amounts of energy to power thousands of computer servers, and large amounts of water to keep the computers cool. Henrietta Town Supervisor Stephen Schultz has said he’s not against data centers, but wants them to be built sustainably. You can read more here.
