Chicago police have ordered the immediate closure of a Lincoln Park bar where a fight broke out Sunday night, with a 30-year-old man shot and killed during the altercation.
According to 43rd Ward Ald. Timmy Knudsen, The Dime was the subject of a “Summary Closure Order” issued by interim Chicago Police Supt. Fred Waller this week, shuttering the bar immediately.
In a letter to constituents, Knudsen said his office will continue to pursue the revocation of the bar’s liquor license, which would ensure its permanent closure.
“In partnership with the local community, my office has pushed for further restrictions and investigation of this bar due to several years of safety incidents. I am grateful to Superintendent Waller for understanding the ongoing public safety threat of this bar, and taking the rare step of a Summary Closure Order,” Knudsen said.
According to Knudsen’s office, the current closure can last up to six months. If the bar were to seek to reopen, city ordinance would require The Dime to negotiate a “Nuisance Abatement Plan” with the city, which would include additional security staffing, more cameras, and earlier hours of operation.
The bar, located in the 2200 block of North Lincoln Avenue, was where a fight apparently broke out between multiple individuals just after 11 p.m. Sunday.
During that fight, an assailant pulled out a gun and shot 30-year-old Malik McCorkle multiple times. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A weapon was recovered at the scene, and a suspect in the case was taken into custody, according to police.
