WEBSTER, N.Y. — A former Rochester American and Jr. Amerks head coach is joining a Webster native on the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Boston Fleet.
Francois Methot played in Rochester from 1998 to 2003. After a playing career that extended until 2016, Methot returned to a place he now calls home.
“To me was very special. It was also my first pro team. So obviously I moved back when I retired and I live here now, so I’m fully integrated in the community,” Methot said.
It’s where he got his start on the bench, becoming a youth boys hockey coach. But maybe his best player ever was a girl.
“Right away, first practices, I noticed how skilled she was, how intense she was. She did not say a word. She was just playing and having fun with the game, but very quiet,” Methot said.
“In eighth grade. Just a little girl playing with the boys. I didn’t talk much. Just going to shake my head and listen. So it’ll be fun to kind of have this relationship with him and go into the season. And obviously he definitely knows what he’s doing. So I’m excited to have him in Boston,” Haley Winn said.
The two will reunite in Boston, but they’ve spent the last decade working together in the offseason.
“He says that he just pushes pucks for me, but I owe so much my development to him,” said Winn.
Methot was there when Winn got selected to play for Team USA.
“And then when she got the call that she made the Olympic, she gave me a call and she was very emotional and I was so proud. Like it was my own daughter,” Methot said.
He was also mentioned when Winn won Rookie of the Year.
It’s been a meteoric rise for Winn, one that doesn’t shock Methot one bit and one that he’s happy to join.
“She was truly the most committed athlete I’ve been around. So I really committed to helping her. And next thing you know, she made the Olympics and I was amazing. And then they came up with this league and you’re talking about someone that absolutely loves the game,” Methot said.
Winn will return for her second year with the Fleet.
