According to PEOPLE, Fushimi died after an incident at the Matsusaka Keirin tournament on July 18 after crashing into a barrier. He succumbed to his injuries at 10:15 AM on July 19 at the age of 50.

“It is truly heartbreaking that he lost his life in an accident during a race,” Hiroshi Kido, the chairman of the Japan Keirin Association, told The Independent. “We will reconfirm our safety measures and thoroughly ensure fair and safe races.”
The outlet also reported that Fushimi “made his professional debut in the keirin in 1995, winning 619 races, five G1 titles and the Keirin Grand Prix twice, in 2001 and 2007. He returned to racing this May after a four-year lay-off.”

Fans also paid their respects on Reddit, with one saying, “1 of every 4 races he won. The Eddy Merckx of Keirin and track racing. A terrible loss for track cycling.” Another said, “RIP, watched him race in Matsusaka years back, and he was already a legend then. Crashing at 50 still going all out says everything about the man.”
