The Chicago area has been dealing with wildfire smoke for several days, but a severe weather threat is also looming for the region as a system sweeps down from Wisconsin.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, most of the Chicago area is at a “slight” risk of severe weather on Monday night and perhaps even in Tuesday morning, with heavy rainfall, gusty winds and hail all possible as the system moves through from the north.
What’s more, the wildfire smoke that’s billowed into the area from blazes burning in Canada and Minnesota may not be pushed out by the coming rain, but relief could still be on the way according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
Here are the latest updates, and a timeline of what to expect and when as the weather changes this week.
Monday Afternoon:
An initial round of showers and a few isolated thunderstorms could move through the area early Monday afternoon, and there is at least a chance those showers could stabilize the atmosphere enough to rob the next round of thunderstorms of the fuel they would need to fire late Monday evening.
Behind those showers and storms, conditions are expected to remain smoky, as an air quality alert remains in place through late Monday night according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures will also climb behind the rain, rising into the mid-to-upper 80s across the area during the afternoon hours.
Monday Evening:
Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop in the early evening hours on Monday, and will begin pushing through the Chicago area around sunset, moving from the northwest to the southeast, according to forecast models.
What isn’t known at this point is how strong those storms will be, as the earlier round of showers could rob the second round of some of its strength.
Still, there could be some isolated strong-to-severe storms moving through the area, with the main threats being heavy rains, which could lead to localized flooding, and gusty winds in excess of 60 miles per hour, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
There is also a small chance of some hail with the storms, and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out at this time.
Those storms could stick around past midnight as they continue moving through the southern suburbs of the city, and the rain is expected to subside by daybreak Tuesday.
Tuesday:
After the early showers fade, Chicago can expect another day of hazy sunshine, as wildfire smoke is expected to persist behind the storms that roll through, according to AirNow forecast data.
The air quality alert that’s set to expire at midnight may yet be extended depending on how thick the smoke will be, but that smoke is expected to begin clearing late Tuesday and should continue to be pushed out as winds continue out of the north-northwest.
Air temperatures are expected to be in the mid-80s, but a bit of a cooldown is expected around midweek.
Wednesday:
Winds will continue to pick up out of the north, and that could churn up high waves on Lake Michigan, along with dangerous rip currents that could pose hazards to area swimmers, according to the National Weather Service.
The other big news concerning the Wednesday forecast will be the wildfire smoke, which is expected to further clear out, and the temperatures, which are expected to only rise into the mid-70s according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
That cooldown will be short-lived, but a welcome arrival for residents who have seen readings hanging around the 80s for several days.
Thursday:
Temperatures are expected to begin warming back up under mostly sunny skies Thursday, rising into the 80s for the remainder of the work week.
Even warmer temperatures are possible over the weekend, with readings potentially approaching 90 degrees, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
