Brent Venables had a lot to talk about on Monday morning in Tampa as SEC Media Days got cranked up, and high on the list for the Oklahoma head coach was the renewal of an old Big 12 rivalry, SEC style.
On Nov. 21, at a kickoff time and TV designation to be announced, Venables’ Sooners will host Texas A&M in a matchup that could potentially hold the key to how the final SEC standings shake out. The result not only could determine which team slides into the SEC Championship Game a few weeks after but also who has the inside track on a potential College Football Playoff berth.
These are 2 proud programs who made an appearance, albeit a quick one, in last year’s Playoff, with both teams being eliminated in the first round. Now, Brent Venables‘ team and Mike Elko‘s Aggies will collide in a late-season matchup that will be the programs’ first meeting since 2012, which was Texas A&M’s first season in the SEC. Oklahoma was late to the SEC party, joining the league in 2024, and in 2026 the 2 old rivals will finally hook up again in a series that Oklahoma leads 19-12 all-time,.
Venables spoke to reporters on Monday morning about the renewal of a rivalry that dates back to 1903:
“It’s exciting. Another one of the long teams that talks about the depth of the SEC,” Venables said. “Mike (Elko) and his staff have done a wonderful job at building the roster, taking over a really good roster when Jimbo (Fisher) left, continued that tradition of building in the trenches. If they’ve done something really well, they’ve done that well. Going to be a great, great challenge. Going to be in Norman, thankfully for us. One of many good teams that, man, we have to show up with our ‘A’ game and have a chance to compete.”
While Oklahoma has dominated the series, Texas A&M won that last meeting 14 years ago, so the Sooners can get some long-awaited payback in front of the home fans in November.
