ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester woman has been arrested after the New York Attorney General’s Office says she stole thousands from people living at the nursing home she worked at.
Tammy Echols, 56, is charged with grand larceny and scheme to defraud. The Attorney General’s Office says an investigation by its Medicaid Fraud Control Unit found that between January 2023 and August 2025, Echols used her position as a senior account specialist at St. John’s Home to issue checks from the facility to her friends, associates, and local businesses that she owed money to.
The office says after taking a fee, Echols’ friends and associates sent most of the stolen money back to her. In total, the office says Echols stole over $154,500 that people living at St. John’s had deposited with the facility to cover their expenses.
Some of the businesses Echols issued checks to included a local florist, a bakery, and a construction contractor, the office says.
If convicted on the top count, Echols faces a maximum sentence of five to 15 years in prison.
