ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” stormed the box office during opening weekend with an estimated $124.5 million in domestic ticket sales and another $139.6 million from overseas sales.
Rochester shares two special connections with Nolan’s take on Homer’s epic, which follows Greek hero Odysseus on a 10-year journey to return to his kingdom of Ithaca.

“The Odyssey” was shot on more than two million feet of Kodak 65mm Motion Picture Film, made in Rochester. A post from Kodak said it was thrilled to celebrate the film’s release. Kodak also made the film for the 35mm version, 70mm 5-perf version, and the IMAX 70mm version that Nolan has touted as the “best possible experience” for viewing.
“The Odyssey” is considered the first movie ever shot entirely on 70mm IMAX cameras, offering a high-resolution picture. Only 25 theaters in the U.S. will screen the movie in that format, and Cinemark Tinseltown Rochester on Buffalo Road is one of them.
The only other theater in New York State screening the film in that format is AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York City. You can see the full list here.
