His name is Mr. Pickles, and the last time he came through these very same doors, he was in a far worse condition, suffering from severe neglect and matting. This time around, he was there to reunite with the people who saved him.
In May, the 6-year-old cocker spaniel was rescued by animal service officers from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office alongside three other dogs from the home of a deceased resident. He was suffering from pounds of matted fur that covered his eyes and ears, and had been trapped in a closed closet. Anna Taylor was the veterinarian on staff at VEG ER that night, and she lead his initial treatment. She said at first, it was hard to make heads or tails of what they were dealing with.
“He came in, [and] I didn’t know what to think,” she said. “I didn’t know the gravity of it until we decided we had to do something and help. We sedated him for quite a bit of time. Several hours of shaving, clipping, at least five people involved in his care, for us to really see the gravity and severity of the condition that he was in.”

Taylor said Mr. Pickles case was the worst instance of matting she has ever seen.
“I’ve seen neglect cases, abuse cases, but something about Mr. Pickle’s case just hit a little bit harder,” she said. “We were shaving, he had mats of feces on him. I found Snickers bars in between his toes, even found some bugs in his matted hair. So it was just something that I was so shocked about and honestly never thought that I would see.”
Then, just over two months later, Mr. Pickles was brought by his caretaker Mary Lucas, founder of Longleaf Animal Rescue, to reunite with the VEG ER team and the officers who initially found him. He received a dog-treat cake and a basket of toys with plenty of pickle plushies. In return, he showed his love to each and every person involved in his rescue, excitedly greeting everyone he could at the event.

“I knew I was gonna be excited, but I didn’t think that the waterworks were gonna come as they did,” she said. “Seeing him that night after having sedated him for that amount of time, and him waking up being super confused, scared, just thrashing around in the kennels, screaming every time we touched him, I was genuinely concerned that potentially he wouldn’t be adoptable if he didn’t acclimate to people and acclimate to outside environments. So to see the huge change and difference in his personality and how much happier he is now and that he loves everybody, [it] is really amazing.”
Caitlin Cade was one of the Animal Services Officers who first made contact with Mr. Pickles and the other dogs trapped in the Chatham County residence. She said her reunion with a much happier and healthier dog was quite the occasion.
“We’ve seen updates of him throughout his process. Seeing him in person’s a lot different than pictures,” she said. “Seeing his personality from how he was before, he was probably shell shocked whenever he could finally see. Before all we saw was one little eye, and he had a cherry eye. His reactions and everything today versus how they were when he finally came out are completely different. Completely different dog, personality, conditions, everything is great.”

After Taylor’s team removed somewhere between five and ten pounds of matted fur, Mr. Pickles went to live with Mary Lucas, the founder of Longleaf Animal Rescue.
“I had a bedroom set up for him,” she said. “When he came on arrival, we let him sit there for about a week and did not do anything. We didn’t touch him. We didn’t make him do anything. We just fed him and kept an eye on him and made sure that he was okay and safe. And then slowly I started to toss him treats across the room, and he was terrified of me. He was terrified of touch. You could not get near him. And slowly he started to make his way over to me and at the end of that week, he finally came over and kissed my face.”
And after gleaning inspiration from a big jar of Costco pickles and giving him his memorable name, the rest was history.
“After that, it was real quick,” she said. “I learned he was food motivated and he loved dogs. He immediately latched onto all my dogs, which was really sweet.”
According to Lucas, from here on out Mr. Pickle’s future seems anything but sour.
“He has a couple of approved applicants that are really wonderful. One of them he has met and he met their dog as well and they loved him. So we’re working through some medical things with him. He has one more procedure as I mentioned. Hopefully only one more procedure. And then from there we’re hoping that he can be adopted.”
