ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The rest of Sunday afternoon will bring quiet and sunny weather across the greater Rochester area. Temperatures will decrease into the 60s by 10 p.m. and reach an overnight low near 54 degrees. Winds will be directed out of the west/southwest between 5 and 10 mph overnight. The combination of clear skies and light winds will provide favorable conditions for some fog to develop. This will be most prominent in the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, and east of Lake Ontario. A quiet and comfortable night is ahead of us.
We can expect a mostly sunny start to the work week. However, you may notice a light haze in the sky as a little wildfire smoke lingers. This smoke is expected to stay relatively thin and should not raise air quality index numbers too much. The forecasted AQI for Monday is a maximum of 70 (moderate). Only those very sensitive to pollutants may notice the presence of the smoke. High temperatures on Monday will near 81 degrees and, again, winds will be light between 5 to 10 mph out of the southwest. Only a minimal 10% chance of rain is on for Monday. An approaching warm front may trigger a pop-up shower, however, this is not too likely. You can expect a mostly dry Monday. Monday night temperatures will stay mild around 65 degrees as a warm front cuts across our region overnight and into early Tuesday morning.
Once again, we are tracking scattered thunderstorms for Tuesday with a similar setup to this past Saturday. The warm front that cuts through our region overnight Monday into Tuesday morning may trigger some showers and thunderstorms in the morning. These will be spottier in nature, but it is something worth monitoring in the morning hours. Like Saturday, our threat will increase into the afternoon for storms to become stronger and more organized. A couple lines of storms may develop – one before the cold front (this often happens) and one along the cold front (when our temperature is set to drop). These lines are likely to come through in the afternoon and evening hours. If further data comes in Sunday evening that supports the possibility of strong storms, a Yellow Alert will be posted as a “heads-up” for Tuesday.
