A second wave of smoke that started to hit the Chicago area Saturday afternoon is likely to linger through Monday evening, when potentially severe storms could hit.
After an afternoon of reprieve from the heavy blanket of wildfire smoke that stretched across much of northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana on Thursday and Friday, a second wave of smoke began to roll back over the area on Saturday afternoon. The smoke led officials to extend air quality alerts through Sunday in parts of Illinois and through Monday in parts of Indiana.
While it didn’t plummet air quality to the levels seen at the end of the week, when Chicago ranked the worst of any major city in the world, the amount of smoke in the air was still enough to potentially pose problems for those with breathing issues.
“Unhealthy air quality is expected through Monday for all of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana due to wildfire smoke,” the National Weather Service said. Avoid long or intense outdoor activities or consider rescheduling or moving activities indoors, especially those with pre-existing health conditions.”
Hazy sunshine is expected on Sunday with temperatures in the low 80s. Because of the air quality, officials recommended watching for symptoms like as coughing or shortness of breath if you do spend time outside and to head indoors if you notice them.
Then, on Monday, a high in the mid-to-upper 80s is expected, along with potentially severe storms, NWS said. The primary threats from the storms are likely to be damaging winds and torrential downpours.
“Confidence in where storms form within the larger favorable environment remains low,” NWS said as of 5:45 p.m. on Saturday.
After Monday’s storms, Tuesday through Thursday should be dry, NWS said.
