Nearly 7,000 people have gotten sick from cyclosporiasis across 34 states since May, according to the CDC, including a Chicago man who said the stomach bug sent him to the emergency room.
For the past week, Alonso Zaragoza from Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood said he’s been trying to recover from cyclosporiasis.
“I’m probably at like 80% that’s still better than a lot of people right now,” he said.
The 46-year-old told NBC Chicago he started showing symptoms last weekend, including severe diarrhea.
“It was just every hour and a half going to the washroom,” he said. “I don’t think I slept more than an hour and a half continuously in the last week.”
Things took a turn on Wednesday when he noticed blood in his stool.
“My family was like, ‘that’s not normal,’” he said. “We went to the ER and had it checked. They took blood samples, stool samples, and gave me an IV drip.”
Zaragoza said doctors at Northwestern Hospital told him they believe he came down with the intestinal illness. He looked back on his history to see where he may have caught it.
“I looked through everything, there was nothing that I ate that contained lettuce except for chalupa from the luxe box at Taco Bell,” he said. “I looked at the app, I Googled the ingredients—it said iceberg lettuce.”
The FDA is investigating the cyclosporiasis outbreak in five states linked to iceberg lettuce. Taylor Farms issued a voluntary recall of all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico on Friday, and Taco Bell said it also removed affected lettuce from its restaurants.
Federal health investigators haven’t said if produce from the supplier could be linked to cases in other states, like Illinois.
As for Zaragoza, he’s warning his neighbors to be careful.
“Stay hydrated, be careful at where you’re eating, making sure you wash, clean, and cook any greens that you’re eating,” he said.
The Illinois Department of Public Health said at least 309 cases have been confirmed in the state. Around 60 of those cases are in Chicago.
