ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The National Science Foundation has chosen the Rochester region as a national laser innovation hub.
The NSF is awarding $15 million over the next two years to help launch and build the hub in the city of Rochester and surrounding counties. News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic looked into how the money will be used and what it all means for the region.
In addition to the $15 million, New York State is matching the NSF award and giving $16 million over the next six years, all to help make lasers right here at home.
An estimated $16 trillion global marketplace depends on lasers for everything. Production is typically based overseas.
That’s where the STELLAR project comes in. It’s the University of Rochester’s initiative aimed at expanding laser research.
“Our goals as a community is are to expand our region’s skilled workforce and educational offerings to achieve new levels of laser power, precision and performance, and to turn those technologies and advancement into products and services that make a real impact in our region and in our country,” said Tom Brown, STELLAR principal investigator.
The NSF has the potential to invest up to $160 million in the region to make it a national laser engine, but it will be holding everyone involved accountable. Critical milestones will need to be met that involve the work but also making sure more business and education is heading to the area.
Leaders said the goal is to build on Rochester’s long history as a global hub for optics and photonics.
The project is scheduled to launch in August. Supporters call it a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build on Rochester’s laser science legacy while preparing the next generation of workers for high-tech careers.
