CUBS LINEUP — Okay, here we go. There are 2.5 weeks until the trade deadline, as the Cubs’ second half opens with a winnable three-game home series against the Twins. I’ve got my eye on the Cardinals series at the end of the month, but they’ve gotta buy themselves some breathing room by starting strong against the Twins.
Here’s a look at the Chicago Cubs lineup for the first of three games at Wrigley Field.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Seiya Suzuki, RF Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Nico Hoerner, 2B Michael Conforto, DH Carson Kelly, C Dansby Swanson, SSAlex Bregman has hit fourth already this season, but he’s usually up a little higher than that (most often second, then third). I think, however, that leading every game off with PCA, Suzuki, and Busch (and ensuring they have the best chance at the most PAs) is absolutely the right call.
The only issue is that Bregman, even when struggling, is still walking/getting on base. But he’s not hitting for much average or slugging. So will he be able to drive in runs when these guys get on? And is that better than him getting on in front of them?
I can see the arguments either way. I also know that, for all his offensive warts this season, Bregman does still put the ball in play a lot. So maybe he can drive in runs one way or another, instead of striking out with guys on base.
Minnesota Twins Lineup:
Trevor Larnach, LF Ryan Jeffers, C Josh Bell, DH Kody Clemens, 2B Royce Lewis, 1B Brooks Lee, 3B Alan Roden, RF Luke Keaschall, CF Tristan Gray, SSPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Colin Rea, RHP
Colin Rea has gone four straight starts of at least 5.0 innings pitched and no more than 3 earned runs. In fact, he’s allowed just six earned runs total over those 20.1 IP, which is good for a 2.61 ERA.
However …
The biggest concern (i.e., those results not being sustainable) is the extremely high 88.7% strand rate. For a guy without big (… or even average) strikeout numbers, that’s not usually repeatable. That said, he is generating plenty of groundballs, which we know works in front of this defense.
With all that in mind, note that the Twins (110 wRC+, 4th in MLB) are one of the top offenses versus right-handed pitching this season, and the wind is expected to be blowing out at Wrigley Field. We might need the Cubs lineup to pop off to win this game. So let’s check in on whom they’re facing.
Minnesota Twins: Bailey Ober, RHP
Bailey Ober made just one start before the All-Star break after coming off the IL with elbow inflammation, and it was a pretty good one: 5.0 IP, 3H, 1ER, 1BB, 5K. But in the twelve starts before that game, and him hitting the shelf, he carried a 4.59 ERA with an absolutely tiny 16.4% strikeout rate.
As you can imagine, the peripherals aren’t very strong for Ober, who also had a rough showing in 2025 (5.10 ERA), but he has had high-level success in the big leagues before.
2022: 3.21 ERA (11 starts)2023: 3.43 ERA (26 starts)2024: 3.98 ERA (31 starts)
So there’s talent in there. And now that he’s healthy and got an extra rest over the break, you do wonder how much the elbow was impacting his results.
Over his full career, Ober has been mostly split neutral, though he got there with big swings season-to-season (this year, for example, lefties are hitting him much better than righties, but the opposite was true in his two seasons prior).
All things considered, though, the Cubs bats can’t afford to think Bailey Ober is a particularly challenging opponent. They need to hit, they need to score, and they need to win this game for Colin Rea.
