ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After a quiet Friday night, another Yellow Alert goes into effect starting Saturday morning. This is for two reasons: the return of poor air quality due to wildfire smoke, and strong to severe storms. Starting with the smoke: the smoke that cleared our area on Friday will move back in as the wind shifts overnight. The surface smoke will likely be thickest for a few hours in the morning hours, with air quality likely dropping into the “unhealthy” range once again. If you have health issues or are sensitive to pollutants, the morning hours are when you’ll want to stay indoors. The smoke will clear during the afternoon with a wind shift and cold front.
Meanwhile, that cold front will bring our next big weather impact: storms. These storms are expected to develop during the mid afternoon and clear through the evening. The window for storms looks about 2PM – 7PM. During this time, a line of scattered storms with embedded severe storms may move through our area. The main severe weather impact is straight line winds, but an isolated tornado is possible, along with large hail in the strongest storms.
