MLB Tries to Get Out Ahead of Another Possible Cheating Scandal, and Other Cubs Bullets

The Little Girl – I have been doing this so long that the name no longer remotely fits – has her first lead in a musical, which I’ll get to watch later today. I could not be more proud, or more happy to see her happy. With all due respect to my kids’ athletic ability, I’ll likely never get to watch them take the mound at Wrigley Field, so I can’t say I know “exactly” how it feels to be a parent in that situation. But this is my little version, and it’s magnificent.

Like a parent who finds out their kid has been watching R-rated movies without permission, MLB is modifying how teams can use their iPads:

According to a commissioner’s office memo obtained by The Athletic, teams were pushing the boundaries of guidelines governing the use of technology by “in many cases” installing custom apps that expanded the use of the iPads “beyond their originally intended purpose to include…

    — The Athletic (@TheAthletic) July 16, 2026 Apparently some teams had started to use generative artificial intelligence to assist them in making various in-game decisions right there in the dugout on the league-issued iPads, and it isn’t hard to see that becoming a gateway to cheating. Before it got there (the report indicates MLB did not find actual cheating … yet), the league wanted to squash the practice. Upwards of 1/3 of the teams were using these kinds of modified apps, per the report, so it’ll be interesting to see if we notice any changes the rest of the way. Pitch-calling was a big focus in the report (teams using AI to live-update throughout the game and gain otherwise-undetectable insights about what to throw when and to whom and in what location). But I kinda wonder if pitch tipping could become the bigger issue. Who knows what teams could be inputing live to help determine what’s coming next? We know that teams’ aggressive approach to trying to access pitch tips was a much bigger story of the last few years than we previously realized, so why not fold in AI? The Nationals have given up on Robert Hassell III and sent him to the Pirates for a PTBNL or cash. He’s already cleared waivers, so he’s just on a one-year minor league deal at this point. Once upon a time, the 24-year-old outfielder was the 8th overall pick and a significant enough prospect to be a notable part of the Juan Soto trade, but just about from the moment that trade was executed, Hassell stopped hitting. There was a brief bounce-back at Triple-A in 2025, but he was unplayable in the bigs, and then hit .215/.304/.289/59 wRC+ in a return to Triple-A this year. Something very fundamental has to change if he’s going to continue professionally (he needs to cut his strikeout rate *AND* dramatically improve the quality of his contact). Maybe the Pirates have some ideas. Interesting story about the Aroldis Chapman trade, including the feedback Theo Epstein sought from Ryan Dempster:

When the Cubs explored the acquisition of Aroldis Chapman back in 2016, part of the due diligence done by Theo Epstein included a phone call to Ryan Dempster. He explained the process on @SpiegsAndHolmes. pic.twitter.com/nxvsmu7Ceg

    — 104.3 The Score (@thescorechicago) July 16, 2026 If folks remember, that was a bit of a tricky one at the time, not only because the price tag was going to be so monstrous for a rental reliever, but also because there was an unclear domestic violence situation recently for Chapman (he was suspended 30 games at the outset of the season, and the allegations were quite serious, but there was ultimately no criminal action because the prosecutors had conflicting accounts of what had happened). I appreciate that Epstein used Dempster as a conduit to take the temperature of the players on whether they wanted Chapman, though it’s also like … uh … yeah. A group of players fighting to win the first championship in 108 years for an organization, asked if they want to add one of the most dominant relievers in baseball? They’re gonna say yes. Very loudly, it sounds like. Just re-use this one and change the year IMO:

    — The Style Scout (@stylescout1) July 16, 2026 I’m half-kidding, but it would be nice if the ultimate logo isn’t some sleek, ultra-modernized thing. It better be classic/vintage/etc., you know? Throwing it way back:
