ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Wildfire smoke remains thick over the area, with air quality in the “unhealthy” and “very unhealthy” range Thursday evening and into much of the overnight. We will begin to see some improvement into the morning hours of Friday, at which point we should be able to discontinue our Yellow Alert. That being said, we’ll likely still be dealing with some smoke in the higher levels of the atmosphere, meaning it’ll be visible, but have less of a health impact on Friday. Air quality may still be degraded in parts of the western Southern Tier for much of the day Friday.
Aside from any smoke, we should see fair weather on Friday with some sun, a bit of a bluer sky, dry weather and seasonable temperatures in the lower 80s.
Saturday is another Yellow Alert Day, with some smoke moving back in from the southwest, but also for an increasing chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some storms may be strong to potentially severe during the afternoon and evening hours as a cold front approaches. The main weather impact will gusty winds in any strong storms, but hail and lightning will also accompany the strongest storms. If you have outdoor plans on Saturday, especially during the afternoon and evening, you’ll want to pay close attention to the forecast and any changes regarding timing and intensity.
