Criminal Minds introduced Felicity Huffman as Joe Mantegna‘s potential love interest, but could the actress return following her surprise exit?
“We’ll see,” Mantegna, 78, who plays Rossi, quipped during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly while reflecting on his onscreen journey. “I was just going to say that, as you know, I’ve worked my way through three wives and one of them twice.”
Mantegna expressed his hopes for seeing his character fall in love again.
“Poor David, I’ve not had a lot of good luck in the romance department,” he continued. “Interesting you bring up Felicity, because she’s someone I’ve known since she was in college, basically, because she’s married to William H. Macy, who’s somebody I’ve known for probably almost 50 years now.”
‘Criminal Minds’ Cast: Then and Now
The actor told Us he was glad he “already” had a “connection” with Huffman, 63, before she joined the show.
“I don’t know where it will go,” he added, “but I often am as excited as everyone to know where they’re headed with something like that. So we’ll see. But as of right now, I don’t know what’s in the future on that side of the street for David Rossi.”
Michael Yarish /Paramount+Season 17 of Criminal Minds introduced Huffman in the role of Jill Gideon, the ex-wife of Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin). In addition to helping the BAU on a case, Jill reconnected with Rossi, which hinted at her possibly returning to the show in the future.
“Felicity was such a gift to us. She and Joe have known one another for 40 years, so it was like kismet that we were able to get her. There’s sort of a shortcut [in] getting a character to come in with all of that history of the BAU,” showrunner Erica Messer told Us in June 2024. “It is just acknowledging the fact that we’ve had two decades of getting to know all these people in this world that they’ve been trying to keep safe all these years. And so, [we’re] acknowledging who’s been here before and maybe who can come back.”
Messer pointed out at the time that Jill and Rossi still had unfinished business.
Which 'Criminal Minds' Stars Are — And Aren't — Returning for Season 19?
“Even with Felicity, it feels like she and Joe — she and Rossi — aren’t quite done yet,” she teased. “But she was such a huge help in bridging the gap [with story lines]. Her filling in those blanks with us — she just fit right in, didn’t she? She’s incredible.”
While there could be plans for more romance, Mantegna hinted that he would likely be kept in the dark, telling Us, “A lot of members of the cast will get these scripts ahead of time. I never do. I never engage in what’s coming up next until I’ve finished what I’ve already done, because I just figure it’s like going to a fortune teller. I’m not supposed to [know] what’s going to happen tomorrow. I will find out tomorrow.”
He continued: “After 20 years of doing this show, we must be doing something right that’s working. I give credit to our creative staff and the writers. I enjoy … the unexpected and what’s coming up next as much as everybody else. For me, that’s part of the enjoyment of even playing the part that I’m not always — until I am doing it — in the know of where it’s going. It’s as much a discovery for me as it is for everyone.”
