Reolink is a home security technology company that was founded in 2009 by a group of engineers focused on making smarter and more accessible surveillance solutions. The brand has grown into a global player, with its cameras and systems used by millions of people across more than 100 countries. At its core, Reolink focuses on delivering reliable and user-friendly security products that do not require a ton of technical knowledge to set up, which is a big part of its appeal for both homeowners and small businesses.
What really sets Reolink apart is its focus on practical innovation and flexibility. The company offers a wide range of products including wire free battery cameras, PoE and WiFi systems, and smart indoor cameras, all designed to work together in a simple plug and play ecosystem. Over the years they have pushed features like 4K video, dual lens cameras, and local storage options that avoid monthly fees, making their systems feel more approachable compared to subscription heavy competitors.
Unboxing and Setup
Inside the box you will find two cameras, two screw style mounts, two solar panels, the base station, a 64GB microSD card, and the miscellaneous cords needed to power everything. I started by charging the cameras. It is important to use a USB-A to USB-C cable, as the cameras will not charge with a typical USB-C to USB-C cable. I unfortunately found this out the hard way later in the setup process.
For my particular area, it was snowy and gray almost every day, so I was unable to install the solar panels since they needed strong sunlight to work efficiently. I decided to mount both cameras on nearby trees, one in the back to cover the backyard and one in the front to cover the driveway. Since I was mounting into trees, I opted to use thicker screws I already had. The included screws likely would have been adequate, but I did not want to risk the cameras coming loose with the snow and high winds we get here in Michigan.
After securing the mounts, the cameras simply twist and lock into place. From there I connected the Ethernet to the hub, downloaded the Reolink app, and set everything up. The whole process only took a few minutes and was very straightforward.
Overall Use
These cameras have been excellent overall. I did have to tweak quite a few settings to get everything exactly how I wanted it, but once dialed in they have been very reliable. Even without the solar panels installed, I am now over two months in and both cameras are still just above 50 percent battery. On top of that, I can still go back and view footage from over two months ago, and the hub is only showing around 3GB used. I am not sure what kind of compression Reolink is using, but that is seriously impressive.
I am running the cameras at max quality with PTZ tracking enabled, and the spotlight turns on automatically at night. Between the battery life and storage efficiency, this is a major win for me. I previously used a first-generation Blink system, which I liked because there were no storage fees, but the AA batteries died constantly. The Reolink setup fixes both of those issues. The rechargeable battery also makes things easy since I can just run an extension cord out every few months and top them off in a couple of hours.
The spotlight is very bright and provides more than enough visibility to clearly see what is going on at night. The PTZ tracking is also a standout feature. I can actually see deliveries arriving because the camera follows the driver back toward the road, which is something I did not have before.
That said, my experience has not been perfect. The camera in my backyard disconnects somewhat frequently, even though the app shows a strong WiFi signal. I am hoping this gets improved with a future update. The front camera does not have this issue at all. I would also like to see an option for full WiFi connectivity instead of relying on a direct Ethernet connection to the hub. I use a mesh Eero system at home, and I feel like that could potentially help with the disconnecting issue.
I also ran into problems with false alerts during the day. No matter how much I adjusted sensitivity, they kept coming through. I eventually found that turning off the “Others” detection category fixed the issue almost completely. This category seems to pick up things like wind, leaves, and general motion that the system cannot classify. Disabling it made a big difference.
One last thing I noticed is that occasionally the camera will miss an alert when someone walks by in the front. It is rare, but still worth mentioning. Overall, though, once everything is dialed in, the system performs very well and offers a solid balance of features, battery life, and storage without ongoing fees.

Conclusion
At a price of $249.99, the Reolink 5MP Solar Wireless Outdoor Camera system delivers a ton of value. It is not perfect, and there are a few issues like the occasional disconnects and missed motion, but none of them were deal breakers for me. Once everything is set up and dialed in, it just works, and it works well.
I really do love this product despite its flaws. The battery life, local storage, and overall performance make it stand out compared to a lot of other systems I have used. Not having to worry about subscription fees is also a huge plus.
Overall, I would still recommend this system to anyone looking for a reliable and easy to use security setup. It gets very close to being perfect, and with a few small improvements, it easily could be.
