Tuscaloosa County District Court Judge Joanne Jannik set a preliminary hearing for July 23 in De’Kendrick Crawford’s capital murder case. Crawford is facing two counts of capital murder in the deaths of 31-year-old Jose Alvarez-Duenas and 22-year-old UA student Jazmine Bates, as well as one count of discharging a weapon into an occupied building.
According to court records, Crawford was filmed exiting the home where both Alvarez-Duenas and Bates were killed before police arrived at the scene. Crawford was also captured on video throwing something into the woods behind the house.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit has not identified a motive in the case. Crawford had no prior criminal convictions before authorities obtained a felony warrant in May alleging he shot into a building near Coleman Coliseum.
“We have no reason to believe that these victims had done anything to deserve this,” said Capt. Jack Kennedy, the commander of the TVCU. “We don’t know why they were targeted. They weren’t doing anything wrong. They had done nothing wrong to the suspect.”
On July 8, Jannik denied Crawford bond. Crawford is currently in the Tuscaloosa County Jail awaiting his hearing.
