Famed “Bachelor” alum Joe Amabile has revealed a frightening health diagnosis that will require him to undergo surgery this month.
The former Chicago store owner known by fans as “Grocery Store Joe” revealed on social media that he has an early stage brain tumor.
“This past month has been a lot of ups and downs to say the least. After multiple scans and MRIs I have what looks to be an early stage brain tumor,” he wrote on Instagram.
The tumor was discovered during a recent body scan he had done.
“They ended up finding a lesion in my brain, so then I had to go get a brain MRI and there was a blueberry-sized lesion in my brain that looks to be a glioma, which is a tumor,” he said in a video posted to his page.
Amabile will undergo surgery in two weeks, he said, to have the tumor removed and tested.
“It’s been a wild couple weeks. I definitely wasn’t expecting this,” he said. “I think it’s one of those things where you’re like ‘Oh something like this [will] never happen to me.’ And here I am.”
A glioma is “a growth of cells that starts in the brain or spinal cord,” according to the Mayo Clinic.
“The cells in a glioma look similar to healthy brain cells called glial cells,” the clinic reported.
While there are many different kinds of gliomas, some can be cancerous.
“Some grow slowly and aren’t considered to be cancers. Others are considered cancerous,” the clinic reported.
Amabile said he remains hopeful heading into the surgery and is “doing my best to stay positive during this time.”
His wife also offered her support in the comment section.
“You’re so strong and we’re going to get through this together,” Serena Pitt wrote. “I love you.”
In a later post of her own, Pitt said the diagnosis “has come with so many emotions.”
“It has felt very scary, overwhelming and heavy at times,” she wrote. “We feel so blessed to have an amazing community who is supporting us and helping us hold onto a positive mindset throughout all of this! I truly believe Joe is going to get through this, and no matter what happens we’re going to face it together.”
Amabile first appeared on Season 14 of “The Bachelorette” with Becca Kufrin in 2018. He went on to appear on “Bachelor in Paradise,” where he ultimately met Pitt. The two went on to get married in 2022.
He earned the nickname “Grocery Store Joe” as he was part owner of Eric’s Food Center in Chicago’s Hegewisch neighborhood on the city’s South Side.
