I’ve got another dentist appointment lined up this morning, so I’ll be out of commission for a chunk of the morning and into the afternoon. Wish me well!
Our countdown to Week 1 of the regular season continues with a look at Chicago Bears legend and a literal game-changer:We are 6️⃣1⃣ days from the Bears kicking off the 2026 regular season vs. the Panthers.Bill George wore No. 61 from 1954-65. So … who’s your favorite Bears middle linebacker? Is it Brian Urlacher? Mike Singletary? Dick Butkus? Is it the OG, Bill George? Could it be someone else? Everybody’s got a favorite. The team’s official website shared a passage from its centennial scrapbook about the history of linebackers, which I found to be an absolute treat. Before Brian Urlacher, I remember Barry Minter manning the middle of the Bears defense. In 1999, Minter led the Bears in tackles (122), topped the team with three forced fumbles, posted the third-most tackles-for-loss (8), chipped in with three sacks, and added a pair of interceptions (including a pick-six) for good measure. One year later, the Bears drafted Urlacher, and the rest is history. — B/R Gridiron (@brgridiron) July 13, 2026 Don’t get me wrong. Everyone is entitled to their own Mount Rushmore. But the omission of Walter Payton here hurt my soul. I wasn’t even alive to see Sweetness at the peak of his powers, but that won’t stop me from putting him on my Mount Rushmore of Bears players. If you backed me into a corner and forced me to choose four players for a Bears Mount Rushmore, I’d go with Walter Payton, Dick Butkus, George Halas, and Devin Hester. I’m putting Hester over Mike Ditka in what will surely be a decision that leads to some witty banter in the comments section. One day, I hope Caleb Williams can make his way onto the franchise’s Mount Rushmore. Bonus points if he doesn’t have to play a down in Indiana. I had some folks ask me why there was a Christkindlmarket in July, and I had no clue how to respond. As it turns out, it was part of the Bears-themed Hallmark movie that is being filmed in Chicago. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the Green Bay Packers signed linebacker Isaiah McDuffie to a one-year contract extension. The deal will reportedly pay McDuffie $8.8 million over the next two seasons and includes $1 million in playing-time incentives. Out in Minnesota, the combination of Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell and quarterback Kyler Murray is a tandem to keep tabs on this season. Can O’Connell resurrect the career of another former first-round quarterback? And, if so, will Murray parlay any success he has in Minnesota into a big contract with a new team next offseason? The Athletic’s deep dive into Terrion Arnold’s arrest is a doozy. I wonder what is next for the former Detroit Lions cornerback.FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook | Twitter | BlueSky
Kyle Schwarber lost another home run derby in dramatic fashion, this time falling to Jordan Walker of the St. Louis Cardinals. If anybody needs me, I’ll be petitioning our fantasy commissioner to allow the dingers hit by Schwarber, Willson Contreras, and Munetaka Murakami to count toward my point total when the fantasy season resumes after the All-Star Break. Sheesh. The Summer League Bulls were trampled by the Jazz despite Caleb Wilson’s efforts. I had to double-check my work to make sure I did not write “Caleb Williams” instead. That is going to be a thing that will trip me up at some point in the future. Hopefully, I’ll work that out in the preseason and it’ll be out of my system by the time Week 1 kicks off in September.
