ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty Monday to shooting and killing a man in front of the victim’s partner and teenage son.
Stephan Jefferson pleaded guilty on Monday to manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon for the killing of Dwayne Hall. The shooting happened on Genesee Street in Rochester on July 12, 2023.
What happened
Rochester Police officers responded to a report of a person shot at around 3:45 p.m. that day. Dwayne Hall, 38, was shot in the chest and died from his injuries at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Rochester Police Department detectives say Jefferson and Hall were arguing before things turned physical. At the end of the fight, Jefferson shot Hall.
Jefferson ran from the scene after the shooting. When police arrested him the next day, he had a loaded handgun on him.
“Stephan Jefferson chose to escalate a confrontation by taking Dwayne Hall’s life,” Monroe County District Attorney Brian Green said. “Today’s guilty plea ensures he will be held accountable for that decision while providing a measure of justice for Mr. Hall’s loved ones.”
Jefferson will be sentenced on August 21 and is expected to be sentenced to 25 years in the New York State Department of Corrections for manslaughter in the first degree to run consecutively to a determinate sentence between 10 and 15 years in the New York State Department of Corrections plus five years of post-release supervision. The total sentence is expected to be between 35 and 40 years in the New York State Department of Corrections.
