Five people have been killed and two others injured in what authorities described as a mass shooting targeting a family in East St. Louis, Illinois, on Sunday.
Illinois State Police said two 16-year-old suspects had been taken into custody in connection with the incident, which spanned three scenes across the area.
Three people were shot and killed at the Samuel Gompers Homes in the 400 block of North 6th Street, while one person was fatally shot at 39th and Summit streets. One person was killed and two others were injured at Jones Park.
Details on what led up to the shooting weren’t immediately available.
Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly, speaking at a news conference, emphasized there is no threat to the public.
“I just want to say these alleged acts, horrific violence taking this number of lives here in this community, it’s terrible,” he said. “It’s evil, but it will not keep this city down…”
