Winter Juniors qualifier Matthew Itkins has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at Georgetown University beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I’m incredibly proud to announce my verbal commitment to Georgetown University. First off, I want to say thank you to my dad for teaching me how to swim at a young age, I couldn’t do this without you. Also, I am incredibly grateful to Coach Rey for his unwavering support and encouragement throughout this journey. I would also like to thank Coach Carroll for his continued engagement during the recruiting process and for providing such an amazing opportunity. I look forward to all that the future holds. HOYA SAXA!!

A rising senior at The Village School in Houston, Texas, Itkins trains year-round with Dads Club Swim Team, where he primarily specializes in sprint freestyle and backstroke.
Itkins is coming off a 2025-26 short course season that saw him drop about a second and a half in the 100 free, more than a second in the 100 back, and over three quarters of a second in the 50 free. He kicked off the season at the Gulf Southern Senior Championships in December, then continued to shave time a week later at his first Winter Juniors – West appearance, where he touched 67th in the 100 back (50.31), 79th in the 200 back (1:52.09), and 99th in the 100 free (46.06). He also contributed to four relays, leading off the 20th-place 400 free relay (45.54), splitting 45.32 on the anchor leg of the 21st-place 400 free relay, anchoring the 22nd-place 200 free relay in an even faster 20.62, and anchoring the 22nd-place 200 medley relay in 20.63.
Itkins ended the season at Speedo Sectionals – Justin, where he clocked all of his current lifetime bests, placing second in the 50 free (20.40), fifth in the 100 free (44.95), sixth in the 100 back (49.37), 11th in the 50 back (23.34), and 15th in the 200 back (1:51.45).

Itkins’ current lifetime bests would already be fast enough to make the ‘A’ final in three of his top events; last season, they would have placed him fifth in the 50 free, seventh in the 100 back, and eighth in the 100 free, and he still has two full seasons of training ahead of him before he even swims at his first conference meet.
Itkins joins Ben Franks, Dylan Stewart, and Maxx Vazirani in committing to Georgetown’s class of 2031 so far.
