Wai Ching Ho, whose decades-long career spanned Marvel's small screen and Pixar's animated features, has died at 82. Ho spent years bringing the calculating crime boss Madame Gao to life across Daredevil, Iron Fist and The Defenders, a role that made her one of the most memorable villains in Marvel's Netflix era.
News of Ho's death was revealed by her Daredevil costar Peter Shinkoda, who played Nobu Yoshioka opposite her in the show's first season.
For a younger generation of fans, she'll be remembered for something else entirely — the warm, gently mischievous voice behind Grandma Wu in Turning Red, the 2022 Pixar film that earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
A cause of death has not been made public.

Friends and Collaborators Remember a Mentor
View this post on InstagramActress Mahira Kakkar, who worked alongside Ho in the National Asian American Theatre Company's staging of "Henry VI," also shared a tribute honoring both her talent and her generosity toward younger performers.
"I had the enormous good fortune to work with Wai Ching Ho and to share a dressing room with her," Kakkar wrote. "She was incredible—warm, funny, caring, joyful, positive and a truly wonderful actor. At the age of 82? 83? she played a lead role—basically a female King Lear, and was riveting."
Kakkar also recalled Ho's warmth off stage, including a piece of advice she often repeated. "She would say to us- Eat two slices of raw ginger every day and you won't get sick! For those of us who did not have a lot of role models and mentors in the industry Wai was a pillar. I am deeply grateful I got to know her and I am very sad she is gone. She also utterly refused to speak ill of anyone. My dear Wai you deserve all the standing ovations- what a stellar human and a stellar artist. What an example of how to live."
